Typical Beervana Attendees #1: The Student Press

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

When I was a student1 we2 got excited when the Loaded Hog Hogs Head Dark arrived on tap in the upstairs bar at the Canterbury Student Union, a wonderful change from the DB Draught, DB Bitter, and DB Export that was served up everywhere else. These days the student magazines run craft beer columns and reporters will travel from Auckland to Wellington to research the latest news on the craft beer scene.

Stephen Bier, the beer writer from Craccum, Auckland University’s student magazine, enjoying a seminar on beer and cheese matching.

(Sorry, Dave Wood, but I don’t appear to have a good photo of you. Plus Stephen’s last name is more apt for a beer writer. Have you ever considered reporting on the porn industry? Or changing your last name to Morhops?)

Footnotes:

  1. Cue a Grampa Simpson joke.
  2. By “we” I meant myself and another friend who having grown up near Nelson considered Black Mac to be the pinnacle of boutique beer. Ah, to be young and naive again.

Typical Beervana Attendees: An Introduction

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

I am getting very excited about Beervana this coming weekend, Friday the 27th and Saturday the 28th of August. Much has already been written about the beer and the event, so to share my excitement I am going to post a series on the people. In particular I’ll be cataloging the typical Beervana attendees.

Most of the photos will be from Beervana 2009 and most have not been seen before. You can see more of my photos from last year in my Flickr set.
