October Brewer Portraits

Friday, November 12th, 2010

Early in October I visited seven breweries. I even photographed some of them.

Two of the breweries I photographed at the laid-back pace that I prefer but I also managed to snap the portraits of some brewers at the other breweries.

Martin Townshend from Townshend Brewery in Upper Moutere.

Mat from The Monkey Wizard in Riwaka.

Nigel from Cassels & Sons in Woolston, Christchurch.

Sean from The Twisted Hop.

Paul from Wigram Brewing Co.

Photography and RSB

I have added a new Gallery section to the website. It is very basic at the moment but will evolve over time as I decide how to best display the photographs. For now you can see photos from my visits to The Mussel Inn, Harrington’s, and Three Boys, plus my photos from the Epic Thornbridge Stout brew day.

I have a backlog of photos to add to the gallery including some from a recent visit to Emerson’s Brewery in Dunedin. I tagged along with Kieran Haslett-Moore, Regional Wines and Spirits’ beer specialist, who was brewing a special beer with Richard Emerson. And not just any special beer but an Extra Special Bitter. The beer, named Regional Special Bitter, will be launched at Regional Wines and Spirits at 5:00pm on Friday July 23, 2010.

Here’s Kieran giving the mash a bit of a stir after the hot water was added, as Richard Emerson looks on.

This photo still needs some tweaking. It is a great demonstration of one of the reasons I dislike both photographing in colour and using a flash: everything has a tinge of red caused by the light of my flash bouncing off a red girder above the camera. I have a strong suspicion that the final version may end up black and white.

The Epic Thornbridge Stout Brew Day

Saturday, May 1st, 2010

On February 19th Luke Nicholas kindly invited me along to document the brewing of the first Epic Thornbridge Stout, a collaboration between Luke and fellow Kiwi, Kelly Ryan from Thornbridge Brewery in the UK. Today one of my photos was used in an article about the collaboration in the Herald on Sunday. Here is a selection of other photos from the day.
